My André is manga-based, I am aware he is very different in his 70's anime incarnation. Manga André is more of a vulnerable and sensitive character, prone to tears. He is also very stupid and impulsive sometimes.

He’s very desperate to be loved, but also has a poor sense of autonomy (it comes with a life of servitude, it is all he's known since childhood...), becoming further disenfranchised as he's losing vision (making him even weaker and more reliant on others, especially at this point in history), cannot legally be a suitor to Oscar because he's only a servant (she is his master's daughter), he nearly comitting a terrible mistake in desperation [that one scene he nearly forces himself on Oscar], but when he becomes aware of it, he stops immediately, is ashamed of himself, apologizes, and leaves... rather than “trying to put Oscar in her place” or “convince her of her womanhood” (aaack...), that was much more what the company B boys were like before Oscar taught them better.

André has also been to brothels once before in the past...

It's part of their character development and growth that Oscar learns the reality of the commoners' plight and becomes an advocate for equality, even if it means giving up the privileges that come with her noble lineage, and André too loves Oscar for who she is and her dedication to the cause, rather than wanting her to be a traditional bride as Girodelle (Oscar's nobleman fiance/suitor—not of her choosing), but I completely understand if this means you'd rather opt out of interacting with André!
